Setting up an Attentive integration

Sending email and SMS opt-ins to Attentive for retargeting

Written by Dan
Updated this week

This article has been updated as of March 2026 as Attentive now support both SMS and Email marketing.

The Attentive integration enables brands to collect marketing opt-ins for both Email and SMS channels, and automatically pass those subscribers through to Attentive for use in retargeting campaigns.

When a consumer submits their details to claim a sample, their information is synced to Attentive in real time, allowing brands to immediately action those new subscribers within their Attentive account (e.g. sending a welcome email or sms).

What the integration supports:

  • Email opt-ins – Capture and sync consumer email addresses to Attentive for email marketing campaigns.

  • SMS opt-ins – Capture and sync mobile/cell numbers, enabling brands to reach subscribers via text message.

  • Dual-channel opt-ins – Both channels can be collected simultaneously and synced to Attentive.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the Attentive integration, you will need to obtain the following credentials from the Attentive team:

API Key – A unique key that authenticates your connection to Attentive's platform. This can either be provided by the Attentive team or (if they give us access to the brands Attentive account) our Platform team can create it for you. The API key must have write access to both Custom Attributes and Subscribers.

SignUpSourceID – An identifier that tells Attentive which sign-up source to attribute opt-ins to. This is also provided by Attentive and is typically unique per brand.

Ensure both values are obtained and confirmed before proceeding with the setup steps.

📘 The Attentive team may want to see and sign off the consent language before providing one or both of the above, so you may need to build out the journey first.

Configuring the integration

Now you are ready to set up the integration. Navigate to the brands account in Campaign Manager and go to the Integrations tab. Once there, you can click the 'Add integration' button and select Attentive from the modal menu.

SoPost Campaign Manager showing the Attentive integration option

On the next screen you will be asked to input:

  • Integration name. We'd recommend calling it "Attentive - {{brand name}}".

  • API Key. The Attentive team will provide this.

  • Sign Up Source ID. The Attentive team will provide this. This field identifies records coming from SoPost so will be useful for segmentation and ROI analysis later.

  • Send custom attributes. Check the box if you plan to send custom attributes to Attentive. See guidance on custom attributes for more info.

Click 'Add integration' to complete the process. You should now see the Attentive integration configured as below:

You can click Retest integration if you're unsure of the status. This will send an API call to Attentive to check our credentials are still active.

You can also remove the integration by clicking the Delete integration button.

Troubleshooting

Retest integration failed

If you've clicked Retest integration and you see the following error, you will need to reach out to the Attentive team to get a working API key.
